The Brisbane Blacks, an independent non-profit First Nations publication based in occupied 'Australia', has brought together a bombastic roster of Indigenous hip-hop musicians, spoken word artists, and activists for the Invasion Day 2014 Mixtape.

Following K-otic 1's killer "Idle No More Invasion Day Mixtape 2013" from last winter, the Brizzy Blacks are keeping the beats banging and the rhythms of resistance rocking with this new compilation of music for the movement.

The Brisbane Blacks "exist for the sole purpose of awakening the Black CONSCIENCE,  raising Black AWARENESS and articulating the Black RESISTANCE"—all of which can be heard in righteous hip-hop form on this dope new mixtape, which was just released as a free download, following a wave of nationwide protests throughout Australia against the colonial celebration of "Australia Day" on January 26th.

The Invasion Day Mixtape celebrates the resistance and resurgence of Indigenous peoples in "Australia" to rise up and reclaim their presence in occupied and colonized lands. As MC Triks and bAbe SUN spit on their anthemic track: "We Still Right Here". And that's something we can get behind. Solidarity, brothers and sisters. This is a perfect first #MixtapeMonday of 2014.

A Tribe Called Red: Turtle Island Tour Dates 2014

Fresh off a winter break and another banner year of touring and accolades, A Tribe Called Red are getting ready to hit the road for a string of tour dates across Turtle Island.

ATCR have "been in the studio working on some new songs and will continue before going on tour", so keep an eye out for new tunes on this winter tour—and keep an eye for their debut music video for the track Sisters which is currently being finalized.

Following their Turtle Island tour, the Tribe is working on plans for a tour in France. So get your moccasins and dance moves ready: the electric powwow is hitting the road once again.

The Best Indigenous Music of 2013

2013 was a very good year for Indigenous music. Here are our favourite reasons why it's an incredible time to tune in. We're still here—and we're still making amazing music.

Look around you: from the front pages of websites, magazines and the news, to the halls of art galleries, centre stages, and dancefloors, clubs, festivals and playlists, Indigenous artists are at the forefront of almost every form of art and culture. And although we love all kinds of creative expression at RPM, this is a particularly inspiring time for Indigenous music.

In a year that began with the sound of the drum, and in the #RoundDanceRevolution that followed, our music has continued to keep us in time and on beat as the world marches ahead—with our people leading the charge.

As we spin back around for #Revolution2 here at RPM, we asked our Indigenous community to weigh in with their picks for the Best Indigenous Music of 2013.

Mohawk radio host, writer and artist Janet Rogers always knows what's up. At the top of her best album list is Derek Miller's Blues Vol. 1. Why? "Hot, rough, sexy, blues." Other top album picks from Janet are The Johnnys' Rock - "A generous offering of the Thinking Man’s Metal Music" and Patrica Cano, Songs from Tomson Highway’s the (post) Mistress, for her "sultry vocals with perfect pitch."

Anishinaabe broadcast journalist and writer Waubgeshig Rice just posted his Top 10 albums of the year, which includes the doomcore metal grind of Biipiigwan's Something for Everyone; Nothing for Anyone, and Leonard Sumner’s Rez Poetrywhich Rice praised as "a riveting portrayal of the unique struggles and triumphs of Anishinaabe people. It’s the album I’ve been waiting my whole life to hear."

The other Wab (Wabanakwut Kinew, that is), also picked Sumner's Rez Poetry along with Inez Jasper, Winnipeg Boyz, and powwow group North Bear as some of his favourites. Anishinaabe musician, scholar and organizer Melody McKiver listed some interesting additions, including Northern Voice's "Dance of the Moon" and shouted-out the Aboriginal 'Australian' MC K-Otic One's righteous hip-hop compilation the "Idle No More (Invasion Day)" mixtape.

Indigenous Waves radio host Susan Blight echoed many of our choices, and also shouted-out the latest from Quese IMC "Handdrum" for bringing "it all back to the roots; the importance of the sacred fire, the ceremonies, and the sound of the drum" and a unique collab between Just Jamaal and Lena Recollet "What's It All About" that was "released in solidarity with Idle No More--referencing broken treaties, environmental racism, and issuing a call for resistance all over slick production from Hyf the GypsySun".

And, of course, a certain Polaris Prize-nominated Indigenous crew seemed to pop up everywhere we turned and at the very top of everyone's 'Best of' list. But more on that later.

10. Frank Waln - "Born Ready EP"

Ascending to the hip-hop pedestal with a calm, collected confidence and wisdom beyond his years, Lakota MC Frank Waln turned the heads of almost everyone this fall when he dropped the powerhouse video for his NDN rap anthem "AbOriginal". With its massive "when I rise / you rise" hook, overflowing lyrical pride, and his obvious love for his people and nation, Waln brought some much-needed realness and a refreshing dose of youthful warriorism back into the Indigenous hip-hop game. Oh and The 1491s' Dallas Goldtooth directed a video for him. And did we mention that Waln composed, recorded and mixed all the tracks himself? And that he writes honorific rap dedications to his mother and grandmother? Yeah, good luck to the rest of you. Frank Waln is walking the talk. 9. Cris Derksen - "The Collapse"

A now-ubiquitous fixture on the contemporary Indigenous music scene, Métis musician Cris Derksen's soaring cello melodies and effects-laden staccato bursts, beats and wailing cries, are a haunting, soaring, cinematic soundtrack to our peoples' burgeoning resurgence that give you chills and the increasing sense of possibility that so much is yet to come... 8. Kristi Lane Sinclair - "The Sea Alone"

Speaking of Cris Derksen, you can hear her cello stylings on Haida singer Kristi Lane Sinclair's latest grunge-folk album that, as its title invites, carries you across waves of solitude, heartache, reflection, fierceness and vulnerability.  Kristi’s voice ranges from a low growl to a sultry spell (including one of the best musical deliveries of the f-bomb in recent memory) and her style is not for the faint of heart, which is to say there is a frankness, darkness and richness on The Sea Alone that pulls you deeper into her world with each listen. 7. Shining Soul - “Sonic Smash”

Shining Soul burst onto our playlists with their commanding album Sonic Smash just in time to make an appearance on the #NationHood Mixtape with their lead-off single "Get Up". But the whole album goes deep with soulful hip-hop anthems that strike back against oppression wherever they find it and find root in the strength and vitality of their creative expression. 6. Tall Paul - “Birthday Present EP”

The remarkably consistent Anishinaabe MC from the Twin Cities, Tall Paul, keeps up his stellar record of releases with a head-knocking EP of assured, intelligent hip-hop that made its place on the list just for the standout storytelling track, "Taurus the Bull" (ft. $kywalker). The rest of the record rocks too. This is everyday rap responding to the real highs and lows of trying to survive and thrive in the game. 5. City Natives - “4 Kingz”

The dynamic mic skills and boom bap-inflected east coast production of rising hip-hop stars City Natives bangs all the way through. Barely a year into their collaboration as a crew, City Natives brings together the multi-talented forces of Beaatz, IllFundz, Gearl, and BnE, like a young Native rap Voltron. Featuring incredible beat production from Juliano, the pass and trade flows of this crew sounds hungry for respect, recognition, and social change in equal parts. 4. Leonard Sumner - "Rez Poetry"

Speaking of realness, you just can't get around the raw authenticity of Anishinaabe singer-songwriter Leonard Sumner. Landing right near the top of almost everyone's year-end list, Rez Poetry, offers a clear-eyed personal take on choices and consequences, struggles and love, and the complexities of contemporary Indigenous life—all spun through Sumner's unique brand of Native roots music that is deeply infused with acoustic guitar hymns, hip-hop rhythms and cadences, and just enough country and rhythm & blues to rep the urban, rez, and everywhere-in-between Indians with equal power. 3. Leanne Simpson - "Islands of Decolonial Love"

Bridging many worlds, storylines, generations, and forms of creativity with effortless poetics and heartbreaking, deceptive simplicity, Leanne Simpson was the only Anishinaabekwe that we know of who dropped a full-volume of published stories and poetry in tandem with a collaboratively composed album of the same, set to the expansive sonics of many of Indian Country's rising stars (including Tara Williamson, Cris Derksen, A Tribe Called Red, and Melody McKiver). Halfway between story, song, and verse, Simpson's poems flow through you like long-forgotten dreams suddenly remembered. Inspiring, strong and swift, these are the currents of sound that surround each island of decolonial love. All that, and it's available digitally and as a beautifully bright orange analog cassette release. So go dig up that tape player from the basement and rewind into Simpson's hypnotic spell. 2. Samantha Crain - "Kid Face"

Choctaw singer Samantha Crain is three albums deep, at twenty-seven years young, and her music already echoes and twists through generations of greatness. With her urgent, accomplished and irresistible craft on its finest display to date, Kid Face offers up Crain's melancholy-infused melodic brand of Americana with a suite of songs that navigate pain, love, loss and growth with an aching resonance of unvarnished truth. 1. A Tribe Called Red - “Nation II Nation”

What other praise can be given to our brothers from ATCR that hasn't already been said? Since dropping their plaintive instrumental "The Road" exactly one year ago today, in honour of Chief Theresa Spence and the Idle No More movement, A Tribe Called Red has continued their stratospheric rise from the booming dancefloors of the electric pow-wow to the forefront of the world's musical consciousness. Seemingly overturning every false colonial conception about being Indian in the 21st century with each kinetic set of party-rocking, this three DJ crew blows the roof off everywhere they go, while always reppin' for the people. With their second full-length album, Nation II Nation, ATCR single-handedly dropped the revolutionary soundtrack that we all knew we needed, while elevating and expanding the possibilities of contemporary Indigenous music culture and pushing their electronic/Indigenous aesthetic hybrid forms to new heights and levels of power. Angel Haze Reveals 'Dirty Gold' Details: Debut Album Featuring A Tribe Called Red

Cherokee MC, spitfire rap sensation, and rising hip-hop star, Angel Haze, has revealed details about her upcoming debut album, Dirty Gold, that will feature her collaboration with Indigenous DJ/production crew A Tribe Called Red.  

The 12-track album, Dirty Gold, drops March 3 on Island Records and is set to include her massive track "A Tribe Called Red"—the banging ATCR collab that we recently featured in  The #NationHood Mixtape.

Now the track has a full album version, new artwork, and a brand new lyric video that you can check below.

ᑭᒥᐊᐧᐣ Kimiwan Zine Turns One!

Kimiwan's first anniversary is being celebrated this weekend in Saskatoon and we've put together a playlist of the artists who are gonna rock that house so we can all join the party!

Kimiwan is a quarterly publication created by Joi Arcand - the artist behind a lot of RPM's graphics, like all of the killer podcast images  (swoon) - that showcases words and art from emerging and established indigenous writers and artists.

To celebrate one year of Kimiwan, the crew is having an art show and party hosted by Ryan McMahon with music from Bear Witness, Eekwol, Nick Sherman and Leonard Sumner. AKA some of my all time faves.

The prolific and talented Anishinaabe MC Tall Paul drops a new two-part track, "The Show (Act 1 &2)", reflecting on Dave Chappelle, encounters with stardom, and maintaining integrity in the struggle for artistic success and survival.

In classic rap storytelling mode, Tall Paul recounts the well-publicized recent shout-out that he received from legendary comedian Dave Chappelle at a show in Minneapolis. Chappelle had heard word about him, downloaded his album, and was a fan of the track "Protect Ya Spirit".

On "The Show (Act I & Act II)", Tall Paul reflects on Chapelle's own journey navigating the perils, pitfalls and possibilities of celebrity and fame—while discussing his own subsequent encounter with the 'attention spike' of Chappelle's celebrity endorsement, and his drive to maintain artistic integrity when Chappelle's "the furthest thing from working wage" rolling in a Jaguar, and Paul's driving a Buick "going to protest a mascot".

This is a hip-hop story of the working class hero: hustling for recognition, while trying not to sell out in the process. Respect is earned in the struggle, not paraded out in the flash of a momentary spectacle.

A Flow So Impossible: Sister Lyricists Mixtape

To kick off #MixtapeMonday, Kanaka Maoli DJ Iokepa Casumbal-Salazar brings us "A Flow So Impossible: Sister Lyricists"—a dope mixtape of female emcees and women's voices in hip-hop to inspire and uplift the people—all the way live from Honolulu, Hawai'i. A Flow So Impossible: Sister Lyricists — Liner Notes and Playlist

Indigenous peoples, in general, and Indigenous women, in particular, experience systemic, institutional, and representational violence all the time.  Though our struggles are different – we seek the return and protection of our ancestral lands, rather than mere inclusion within settler society – many of us Native artists listen to hip-hop and value its subversive qualities.  We appreciate its pedagogical possibilities, making hip-hop more than just a genre, but also a decolonial method and praxis.  As a Native Hawaiian DJ, father, feminist, and writer whose people share a similar struggle, I wanted to support the innovative, if marginalized, voices of women in hip-hop and the music they produce.  This mix features just a handful of artists who are doing something different with hip-hop: something revolutionary.

In Nirit Peled’s 2009 film, Say My Name, hip-hop artist Jean Grae explains, “the most beautiful music comes from pain and struggle”. This mix features some of that beautiful music.  It’s true that much of hip-hop today continues to be exploitative, misogynist, homophobic, and heterosexist. Many male emcees still can’t seem to get through a verse without referencing their body parts or passively disrespecting women and marginalized men. Few men speak out against the degrading representations of women so prevalent in the mainstream. Even fewer explicitly denounce the industry’s failure to support women artists. This silence amounts to culpability. Here’s my humble offering as a show of solidarity in those struggles for a better hip-hop culture: a short and incomplete list, but some of my favorite women emcees.

We have the very dope, “Goddess of Hip-hop,” Medusa, representing Los Angeles, CA. Here she delivers a live version of her stellar hip-hop funk crowd pleaser, “Neck Lock”. Medusa has been in the game for years, but has remained firm in the underground scene, though frustratingly unrecognized by the record labels to the dismay of her fans.

Checking in next is the British emcee with Sri Lankan roots, M.I.A., who is equally loved and scorned by her critics.  Here, M.I.A. kicks a concise verse for the haters.

Founder of the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation and bringing 25+ years in the game, the respected MC Lyte is featured here with her 808-kick drum, boom-bap classic, “Kickin’ for Brooklyn.”  I also had to include a sick duet by Lyte and Medusa that provides the title for this mixtape.

Undoubtedly headed straight to the top is the young and extremely talented Nitty Scott, MC, just slaying us with a refreshing sound on two featured tracks.  Scott combines contemporary content, prodigal technique, and a relentlessly fun approach to wordplay while remaining grounded in the old school, as evidenced by her many nods to the greats who paved the way.

I threw in some beats here and there by the guys, but the tape is really all about the ladies.  Don’t sleep on beat producers Ta-Ku, Samon Kawamura, Ohbliv, The Midnight Eez, Denaun Porter, Dilla, Madlib, The Jazz Liberatorz, Testiculo Y Uno, and Oddisee.  We also have a Nikki Giovanni poem that was featured on Blackalicious’ 2000 Nia, bell hooks and Angela Davis dropping knowledge to beats, along with a few fun clips from the sexy and game-changing Showtime series, The L Word (2004-09).

The microphone fiend, Jean Grae, posts up for three on this mix, clownin’ like she does so well, but also always providing witty lyrics and original concepts.  Jean Grae is one of my favorite emcees at the moment because she is just fierce in her delivery, hilarious with her rhyme style, and selective with her collaborations featuring the best producers around.

We also have Canadian artist, Eternia, announcing her presence in the game.  I respect her courage as a woman emcee rocking a sharp and aggressive energy modeled after the likes of Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, and Kool G Rap.

From her 2008 collection of unreleased material, here is the smooth Stevie Wonder cover by Lauryn Hill (w/the Fugees), “Blame it on the Sun.”  Many of us would like to hear more from Ms. Hill – whenever she’s ready, of course – but are satisfied with whatever we can get our hands on.

Filipina-American, LA-based, emcee Rocky Rivera was a successful music writer for the likes of Vibe and MTV before writing rhymes.  Her lyrics reveal a well-read artist with a rebel spirit.  Here, she spits verses dedicated to three revolutionary women: Gabriela Silang, Angela Davis, and Dolores Huerta.

I also wanted to include another LA emcee I only discovered recently, Gavlyn.  She writes rhymes that speak to being a woman in the industry among her childish and sexist male peers.  With ample swagger, Gavlyn is hungry: a young emcee with a serious commitment to hip-hop.

One of my favorite emcees since she dropped Shapeshifters in 2008, Invincible hails from Detroit with a beautifully chalky voice, smart writing, and important content.  I had to include three tracks in this mix because, like Jean Grae, she so skilled and concerned with social justice.  On “People Not Places,” she interrogates the violence of forced removal, the logic of replacement, and the illegal settlements in Israeli-occupied Palestine.  A Native person’s go to emcee, for sure.

The well-respected lyricist, Rah Digga, kills two tracks on this mix.  A brilliant artist who has spoken eloquently in interviews about the challenges women face in the masculinist hip-hop scene – from motherhood to the petty games that over-entitled boys play with their dis raps – Rah Digga is ferocious with her intricate rhyme style comparable to the hardest male emcees out there.

From Philadelphia, we have the now classic offering by the under-recorded and under-supported emcee, Bahamadia, with her smooth, laid back signature flow, characteristic of the “golden era” chill that we loved about Tribe, De La, and the Roots.

In light of women’s struggles in the industry still controlled by hetero-white men, the stories and music of women like these help us to rethink what hip-hop can mean and do in this world.  Their voices embody alternatives: methods and aesthetics that defy the violent and abusive status quo.  Our support for women emcees is crucial and can help fulfill hip-hop’s transgressive promise in ways that are free from appropriation, tokenism, and exploitation.

In the new charming video from Inuk Elisapie Isaac the Polar Pop artist braves life's perils for love.

Of her most recent album's title Traveling Love Elisapie has said “love cannot be owned. It is something that is always moving, always flowing" and in this video, lyrically and visually, Elisapie seems to be celebrating love within that changing flow, and the risks one might encounter along the way. Like open flames and snakes - eep!

Cris Derksen Making Magic on "The Collapse"

On Cris Derksen's sophomore album "The Collapse," the classically-trained Métis artist continues to experiment in instrumental and electronic realms, drawing inspiration from eider ducks to pipelines, from club beats to Russian composers.

On her debut album "The Cusp" Derksen drew attention from around the globe for taking the traditionally classical instrument, the cello, onto the dance floor thanks to a loop station and a row of effects pedals. While she's adept at playing with beats, she also builds slow, winding, melodic soundscapes, and any live audience I've seen her perform for has never been short of inspired. She's collaborated with artists like Kinnie Starr and A Tribe Called Red, is often commissioned to compose for film and television, and tours across Canada and internationally.

Yup, she's fantastic.

CBC Music described "The Collapse" as "an evocative and highly atmospheric album" (read their full Q&A with Derksen here) and recently Janet Rogers wrote for BC Musician Magazine:

The Collapse, continues to be an exploration and experimentation in the limits and limitless capacity of the voice and the instrument. On her track “In Line” Cris’ vocalization accompanies one of the more melodic compositions in the collection with crash cymbals breaking in bringing to mind a circus soundtrack while watching a high-wire act. In Dark Dance, she brings us back to the original sound that put her on the map while playing the urban club scene where her fan base was built. This is a bassy musical detail flowing over a rapid trickle of notes sending your thoughts skyward, but since this is a dark dance, we surpass the sky and enter unknown galaxies. Yes, it’s trippy, and yes, I like it.

In the meantime, Cris is making magic from thin air and offering a fresh recipe from the same old kitchen. The Collapse is appropriate music for Saturday evening porch-sitting, international jet-setting or hours long sessions of love-making. Sexy, without being sexualized. Well done.

Review: Tara Williamson - 'Lie Low' EP

Anishinaabe author, poet, storyteller, and organizer Leanne Simpson reviews Tara Williamson's new EP, Lie Low.

I first heard Tara Williamson’s voice on a very hot summer night at the Red Garnet bar in Peterborough, Ontario. She was on stage with the swagger of Cliff Cardinal, and they looked like they were having more fun on stage that I’d had in my entire life. I remember Sundogs, but that can’t be right. I remember it being smoky but that can’t be right. The humidity and sweat must have just have been that thick.

Tara came off the stage and over to the bar where my friend Patti and I were sitting. She ordered whiskey, which impressed me. I told her she needed to record an album. She threw her head back and laughed, our brown eyes meeting ever so briefly and I remember thinking, she doesn’t know how good she is. She doesn’t know she had the room.

She played more shows. Peterborough. Toronto. Winnipeg, Saskatoon. She performed with Christa Couture, Billie Joe Green, and Arthur Renwick.  She went to the Diverse As This Land vocal intensive with MC, singer, musician, and poet, Kinnie Starr at the Banff Centre and got inspired. She wrote more songs. She found a vocal coach. She applied for grants. Every month or so, she’d email me garage band tracks with sincere apologies for bad recordings and standardized drum tracks. They left me floored. I lent her my house and she wrote songs. I lent her my mic and she wrote songs. I drove her and her gear to the odd gig in my fake minivan just to be part of the sheer creative energy that she was radiating. She got out of relationships and wrote songs. She got into relationship and wrote songs. She quit smoking and wrote songs. She started smoking again and wrote more songs. She moved four times and wrote songs. She worked full time all day as a professor and wrote songs all night. We spent the winter protesting and round dancing. She was there with us and wrote a protest song. I wrote a book, freaked out because I thought it was bad, sent it to her for feedback, and she wrote a song sharing the name of the book.

I’ve never seen anyone write so effortlessly and prolifically over a sustained period of time. I started to think there was something wrong with me.

And these weren’t just any songs. They were songs that coaxed buried emotions and memories out of my body that I had long filed away. They revived old feelings of love and betrayal, ferocity and tension. They made me cry. They made me feel loved. They made me feel a little bit less alone, normal even, because these weren’t just Tara’s songs, they were my stories too.

Over the summer of 2013, Tara went into the studio with our local sound engineering hero, James McKenty who was fresh off a gig with Blue Rodeo, and recorded six tracks for her debut record Lie Low. I had the album for less than 24 hours and according to itunes I’d listened to it 48 times.

Of Anishinaabe and Nehayo ancestry, Tara’s first instrument is clearly her voice - beautiful, distinct, fluid, moving effortlessly from the gentle, acoustic love song “Come to Me” to the dramatic, whimsical, Anishinaabe/Nehayo show tune “If I were a tree”. Yeah, Anishinaabe/Nehayo show-tune reminiscent of Tomson Highway’s musical numbers (whom I’ve watched enormously enjoy her live performance of the song), but with a little more edge. “Boy” is seductive warning and raw exploration of the first negotiation of an intimate relationship. “July” is its counterpoint – a gentle, accepting letting go and appreciation of the way it is. Her lyrics are often raw poetic truths of want, loss, desire and more than survival.

Musically, the album is difficult to describe because I’ve never heard anything like it before. At its core, this is an emerging singer-songwriter that is already an accomplished songwriter moving effortlessly from pop to R&B to jazz. This is a collection of songs meant to be sung on stages, in bars, on the shores of big prairie lakes and around fire pits in backyards. These are the songs of our times, of our lives, our loves.
