Ojibwe brothers Mike and Gary Johnston have been performing as White Fire Reed since 1997. The years spent writing, performing and honing their alt-rock sound culminated in the release of their first full-length album, Positive Change, just last year. The artwork depicts a flash of lightning, a symbol that inspired the band's name. "To me White Fire Reed is a representation of lightning along the banks, and the reeds are deep down in the water" Mike has said. "There's a lot of strength in thunder, there's balance there". There surely is balance and harmony between these two brothers in their music. They've sent us this track to check out and it's got a sound that has us imagining driving a convertible down a highway somewhere, the wind and music blaring, rocking out.

An Upper Cayuga/Mohawk musician, Andy Mason has been making music for 20+ years. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with guitar, mandolin, drums, bass and harmonica in his arsenal, Andy plays most of the instruments on his recordings. Getting his start in Toronto as an actor and musician, in the company of Gary Farmer, Graham Greene and Floyd Westerman, Andy was part of the first all Native music night in Toronto, The Native Expressions. Since then, his music has moved him from Toronto to Ottawa to B.C. and back. Andy sent us this song that at first grabs you as a catchy, toe-tapping folk song, but listen again to the lyrics for more - there's a story that weaves pain, politics and passion.

Up and coming artist Genevieve Fisher, an 18 year old Chippewa of the Thames First Nation, talks about travelling to Nashville - country music capital of the world - for the first time.

Métis artist Ron Loutit may be an unknown name to some, but he has been writing and performing old school country music for 30 years. Listen to his thoughts and lyrics and learn why the hard time tales of country music are not so far away from the experiences of Indigenous people after all.
